Wandering about in the village at Halloween makes me want to sing this song

It’s a pretty long ballad and I made the real effort to learn it in it’s entirety this year (i was quite chuffed I managed to sing the whole of it from memory here.

I had to do  it in two parts for youtube.  The links are here:

The Ballad of Tam Lin – part 1 – YouTube

The Ballad of Tam Lin – part 2 – YouTube

I first heard it from recordings by the classic Anne Briggs years ago and I just  love the mysterious feel to her recording.  She actually calls the song “Young Tambling”

It is the story of a young woman wandering into the woods and meeting a strange man.  They fall in love (even though it says he “takes her down at the foot of the bush and never once asked her leave” which is technically called rape)

It  does say later “true love”

She is with child, as her servants notice and one advises her to go and collect a herb to bring on a miscarriage “a herb that grows so grey”.  I  have long wondered what this herb could be.  Possibly Wood Sage or even my favourite Mugwort (which is not advised for use in pregnancy because  it brings on the menses)

I shall continue wondering what the plant it and perhaps one day find out properly

Here is more about Tam Lin
